Jade Letters - August 2011

The first thing my 20-year-old son does on buying a copy of Jade is flip through its pages to read your Watches section. Even your accessories pages are a treat for the eye if not for the pocket! I'm going to try out all the nourishing soups published in your June issue. They seem perfect for a rainy day. How about some breakfast recipes?

It's true that the there is a visible change in the marriage trends in South India. With girls becoming fiercely economically independent and exposure to global lifestyle, Indian girls today want to call the shots. Unlike in the past when boys had an upper hand in matters of marriage, women today are making decisions that have changed the status quo of marriages in India. Parents too are giving in to the demands of their children.

South India is seeing more inter-community marriages than ever before. My niece who is from Kerala has married a German and my nephew has married an Australian. The family didn't oppose too much because it would have been an exercise in futility. But we are all happy to see them happy.

What makes Jade stand apart from other magazines on the newstands is the cover! Every issue has a beautiful south Indian face on it! It's unfortunate though that the rest of India believes the beauties from this side of the subcontinent to be dark-skinned and not-so-glamourous. Have we forgotten that beauty is skin deep, and what lies beneath the surface is what really matters. The point I am driving home is that beauty cannot be judged by colour of the skin, height, weight, etc. We have to rise above these petty beliefs.

In one of your previous issues, there was an article on different kinds of diets. Well, diets may seem as a viable option for immediate future but in the long term, none of these are really as effective. What one needs to religiously practise is a healthy lifestyle, moderate eating habits and regular exercises. Given that the current generation has erratic work hours and a not-so-planned lifestyle, it is difficult to maintain good health. But as they say, where there's a will, there's a way!

Your party pages are so full of life. It's fun to read about the party scene in the south though we do get our gossip from the local papers but Jade adds an extra zing to it! Jade covers the full south spectrum like none else. But I'm wondering why haven't you interviewed south's biggest star Kamal Hassan yet? He is second to none when it comes to cult Tamil cinema.

Reena Das, Chennai

I can never find Jade on the newsstands. It is so difficult for us to get a copy of it in Kochi. I request the Jade team to ensure there's enough supply because Jade has a huge fan base in our city.

Ravi Prakash, Kochi

Your fitness story was perfectly timed. I love jogging but it's just impossible to do it in the rains. Thanks to your story, I can now look at other work out options.

Nandini Mehta, Mumbai

It amazes me how Jade brings out such novel food stories, in every issue. Little did I know that turmeric prevents the progression of Alzheimer's and that mustard seeds decongest the lungs. Thanks for such useful info! Can we have an article on organic food?

Reshma Shah, Pune

I tried out a couple of recipes from your magazine and it turned out pretty good! What I liked was that though the dishes look fancy the ingredients were easily available. Also, Jade tends to explore such unimaginable fusion food that it's truly commendable.

Niharika Jain, Chennai

The travel stories in Jade are delightful. The photo essay on Pelling was such a visual treat. The photographer has captured lovely sights that a citylife can never offer. But why don't we get to read more travel articles on driving holidays in the south? There are so many unexplored places. It would be really nice if you could bring that out to the audience.

Kaushik Ram, Coimbatore

My sister and I love reading the Beauty and Fashion columns. Both the experts give such practical useful advice. And of course, my mother enjoys reading the Yoga column. She follows most of the asanas recommended by the expert. Thanks for such an informative column!

What a stunning cover on your July issue! This is one of the best covers I've seen on any magazine. It's not easy for an outsider to become an insider. Jackie Shetty has proved with her will and grit that if your heart has conceived it then your mind can surely achieve it. Please give us more stories on such beautiful people.

Shaina Thomas, Kochi

Your July issue is different from all your previous issues. Jade has never covered CEOs so extensively. It was good to read about their tips for young budding CEOs. The corporate world is all about the balancing act between the right and the wrong, the good and the bad. It is important to stand by what one belives in and not be swayed by emotions in today's working world. But it's equally crucial to keep in mind the interest of your subordinates and workers who invest trust, loyalty, integrity and hard work in the job they do. A CEO should set the right values and work ethics in the company for his employees to follow suit.

Rashmi Uday Singh's article on the 11 Heavenly restaurants was insightful. But I'm not sure how many of us can really afford to tour those places. Thanks for telling us what?s out there. I am of the opinion that no matter which part of the world you travel to, an Indian finds comfort only in homecooked food! And a south Indian finds it in his curd rice!

I rarely read the Question and Answer section in any magazine, but happened to read it in Jade and I was delighted with it. The concerns expressed seem real, unlike other magazines, and the answers are really what one can use. Especially Prasad's fashion answers, that man is a veteran in the field and he really knows what he is talking about. In the July issue, I was heartened to read about Ahimsa SIlk, this is a lesson we can give the world, we as a nation have this principle of living in harmony with those around us, and to know that our young designers are inculcating this belief in their work is praiseworthy. Great story. Talking of the young generation?s beliefs in traditions and values, the story on the dancer duo of mother and daughter was inspirational. Mohiniattam is one of the most graceful and sensuous dance forms and the skill of the dance lies in the controlled movements, to master this art is no mean task, like with all traditional dance forms. It was great to hear of the Bharati and Vijayalakshmi's dance prowess' fame reaching the western world. Sometimes the state of things is such that we know of what is great in our country through international channels! All I want to say is that our country is rich in more ways than one, but we are mired in petty issues, we have politicians who grab our riches and exploit the people, the day we are free of all these ills, we will become a nation for the world to emulate. Praying for that day to dawn soon!
