A year ago... ... Neerja Lakhani and Varun Pratap Yadav, graduates from NIFT and M-IIT decided to come together and establish NEERG. One of India's first fashion brands that exclusively deal in organic cotton and sustainable clothing. Ò We emphasise farming and processing that works with nature and helps minimise air, soil and water pollution. The raw materials come from plants that have not been genetically modified or treated with synthetic or chemical pesticides. Also we make it a point that the dyeing and finishing of the fabric, labelling, over-all handling, is non-toxic. Also the garment manufacturing follows fair-trade practice and does not use child labour. Each of our production channels follow the GOTS (www.global-standard.org) certification, which provides credible assurance of our eco-friendly and ethical standards, says Yadav. The company's operation has proved beneficial not only to the environment, farmers and workers but also their consumers as the company uses only 100 per cent cotton that is naturally disease free, less irritating to the skin than man-made fibres and resistant to fungal infestations, moulds and mildew.
Caring for the environment is a fashionable topic these days. It's only natural then that the fashion industry picks up the trend and makes it part of their business. And although there are many who just pay lip service, there are a few in India and overseas, who have quietly but definitively designed innovative and environmentally-conscious fashion products, finds Ruchira Bose Roy.
