Gizmos - War against wires

lgLG LH9000

The LG LH9000 is a plasma television with a disconnected personality. Cutting a long story short, the set features wireless HDMI outputs. Translation: you can now enjoy the benefits of the Playstation 3 or a set top box without wiring them up to your TV. Simply plug in your HD enabled device to the receiver which sits 10 meters away and voila. LG also claims that their wireless technology does not involve compression of images. Add that to the LH9000?s widescreen format and you get picture quality that stays top notch. Now that?s what you call, must see TV!

Powermat

Let?s not talk about Wi-Fi for a second. Now, how does the idea of powering up your devices wirelessly sound? That?s right. You can now charge your precious gadgets without any cords, all thanks to Powermat. The system pairs an ultra-thin mat with a receiver that connects to your device. Depending on the model, each Powermat can wirelessly charge up to 6 devices simultaneously. What?s interesting here is that the charging occurs at the same rate for each device. It?s like six chargers working on six devices at the same time.

Samsung BD-P4600

Meet the Samsung BD-P4600. Aside from the characterless name, the device has a lot going for it especially in the size department; an anorexic 1.5 inches. Technically, we are looking at the world?s slimmest Blu-Ray disc player. However the feature which qualifies this wall mountable device to appear on this distinguished list is its support for Netflix and Pandora, which means that you can stream video and music over the network. How? By plugging an 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi dongle to the 4600?s USB port. This enables the device to connect to the internet wirelessly. Now if only Netflix could be convinced to start operations in India.

e-Starling Impact8

Photo Frame

Before you scream ?there are other Wi-Fi enabled frames in the market,? hear me out. The Impact8 frame can download and display photos straight off your local network. That?s regular. The frame also provides the ability to email photos directly to the frame?s unique on board email address. That?s not regular. Think about it. You, your family or your amigos can now send images straight to the device without a PC. Keep an eye on what gets sent though. We don?t want to see pictures of you doing things deemed illegal in many states floating around the frame while the family has just settled for dinner, now do we?

Whirlpool Centralpark Fridge

Way out of line here, but a fridge with Wi-Fi capabilities deserves special mention for the sheer gutsiness of the whole idea. Basically the refrigerator features a dock based technology called Centralpark. So, you can attach gadgets like a Ceiva digital photo frame, an iPod or a Clio Vu tablet PC to your fridge door instead of magnets, sticky notes, shopping lists, divorce papers etc. In fact you can take the tablet out shopping with you as a kind of sophisticated buying list. You can also watch films and look up recipes on the tablet when it?s docked back to the fridge. Now tell me, how many fridges can claim to do all that?

Wi-Fi T-Shirt

A Wi-Fi detector in the garb of an ordinary 100% cotton t-shirt, this piece of work shows signal potency of an 802.11b/g connection via glowing bars in the front. The AAA battery pack which powers this display is hidden inside the shirt. Battery life can go up to many hours. The animated label is hooked on and fastened up so you can remove the ribbon connector and leave the ribbon cable inside to avoid laundry related deactivation. You might not be wired but you might look weird. But then, life is full of such ironies.

HP Officejet J6480

The HP Officejet J6480 is a multifunction printer, but what we are interested in is its ability to print wirelessly via the 802.11g route. Setting up multiple computers for use with a wireless printer, which traditionally is a painful exercise, is also surprisingly easy on the J6480. Other plus points include a 35 page document feeder, a huge 250 sheet input tray and the ability to receive and store faxes even when the power is off.
